The Problem With Africa's Borders

Publisert 6. jan.. 2020
This is by far too large of a topic to fit entirely within one video, but here's an overview.
Madagascar has an entirely separate geography, history, and overall identity from mainland Africa. It's for this reason that I left it out of the discussion.

  • This is getting confusing!!!!

  • They did this to the Middle East also!!!????

  • Diversity is our strength???

  • I'm Kenyan, and i promise you changing the borders would create war in the likes you've never seen before 😂😂

  • but what stops the people from change? the power to unify & cooperate doesn't need IMF or UN ?

  • 2:13 ANWB kaart!

  • Eventhough Religions, Languages and Ancestry being the major and important parts to becoming a nation, it is not the reasons why they cannot unified to become a solid nation. Its all comes to agreements on the findings the middle grounds and creating equal constitutional that all parties affected by are being concerned and protected. Granted that it will be a constant issue and conflicts alongside but understanding and comprehension of the complexity of the matters will give them a huge advantages becoming a better nation. Which already been said towards the end this video. That's the only way

  • We have come far as a continent. The main problem is not lack of resources but rather corruption from the ruling elites. It will take a very long time for Africans to elect and make leaders accountable for their own actions. The political landscape is in favour of those in positions of power.

  • Evil empires.

  • Dude, this video was awesome and so well researched ! Seriously thanks, best video I've watched on NOlong in a long time.

  • one thing is for sure, the borders of religious africa are hideous

  • It's same for middle east

  • Why is tge mongol symbol used in the video for islam.

  • nolong.info/show/os51eauVgqejm6M/video.html Which picture is Satan? Black Jesus or white Jesus? Free view video, subscribe, share and like. Jesus Christ is Lord. God bless you.

  • Somalia is the only African country whose borders were created by Africans wow am impressed

  • So essentially all these issues will probably lead to revolutions, genocides, and independence wars in the future

  • Liberals in Europe: "Diversity is our strength, importing masses of people from all over the world will lead to world peace" Liberals in Africa: "African wars were caused by Europeans putting virtually indistinguishable ethnic groups under the same government"

    • Nice cherry picking. Bad joke.

  • One of the worst chapters in human history. Europeans must repair Africa.

    • It doesn't go like that, we may look to that today as something bad thanks to western culture, but back then it was normal, if it wasn't Europe it would be Asia, America or Africa. There have been way worse colonisations than European's one, it is just because Europe colonisation was the biggest one in the history of humanity , that we talk mostly about it. Back then was the era of power, after that came the era of money, and soon will come the era of data. Everyone tries to be the champion of its era, as long as we don't have a global government, nothing will change.

  • Hahah the empire was class

  • Africans is not Africa language is Netherlands

  • An outstanding documentary, thank you. A very harsh reality for our African friends yet it's nice knowing that you ended things with an optimistic perspective. I'm sure they will flourish. And we all must help. We are all Africans.

  • Britain African colonies in total where actually a net loss even with the diamonds. The truly valuable location was Egypt for our constructed Suez canal. it was as important or more so then the Gibraltar straight? The real reason Britain got involved in the scramble for Africa was that it could not be one up'ed or out done by the European powers especially France. Many imperial supporting Britain's also fought it was their duty to elevate the natives with supposed British greatness & scientific wonders? The British Raj is where the profit was made Along with home land industry & far east trade/ opium & later tea?

  • Europe ruined Africa, India, and Palestine in the 20th century and US took the reigns and ruined the Middle East & South America in beginning of 21st century yay

  • Remove the border and combine Kenya with Tanzania.

  • North Africa has to be thankful to Morocco for protecting sunni malki Islam, north Africa is the most stable region in Africa and the middle east thanks to Morocco

  • Kinda wierd video. There's an argument to be made that coloniser cared more about prestige than profit. Simply saying that Italy was formed because of a common ancestry which defines Italians while France is made up of French speakers doesn't make sense to me. And this isn't lake Chad that you pointed.

  • Wow, so you're saying mixing multiple ethnic groups into one country creates division, conflict and war, wow what a racist

  • madagascar be chilling in peace.

  • The British European Ruling Class and British European Elites Obtained their Properties and Wealth through Deception and Theft.......British European Ruling Class and British European Elites should be informed directly to Declare their Wealth publicly to the Citizen of Earth in that way Justice For All and If they refuse to comply with the World Justice Court.......They should be removed completely from any International Public Offices to a further notice.

  • Afro-Asiatic languages are also native to Northern Africa, not entirely a result of Middle-Eastern influences. The Berber and Cushitic languages have existed for over 2500 years, and even Ancient Egyptian was an Afro-Asiatic language.

  • I have to say ,you screwed up with Namibia. You mention that it is wholly Khoisan, but there are at leas 4 Bantu tribes there and the Khoi are really marginalized. You've got Ovambo, Herero, Himba, (Khoi)San and more. Your rule of splitting up nations based on tribes doesn't take into account the areas where the tribes are intermixed. Additionally many Afrikaans speaking Boer Namibians have been in the country for well over a hundred years. Previously Namibia was part of South Africa. Some white families have been there for around 200 years. Considering how long some white families have been in America, and with up to 6% of the country being white, they are part of the country's tribal split now too.

  • The answer is no.

  • How do you think Africa would be like if it wasn't colonized?

  • what about a united Africa with a decentralized government?

  • "Imagine someone coming to Europe and redrawing the borders...": Yeah, that is exactly what the Cordoba Califate, the mongols and the Ottomans did. European borders have been redrawn many, many times. The Czechs and the Slovaks showed how you can settle borders peacefully to both nation's satisfaction.

    • @Mario D`Angelo Sure they have: Eritrea has become independent, so has South Sudan. Biafra and Katanga tried but failed. If the borders are a problem, it is up to the Africans to adjust them. The European Union has made borders largely obsolete, which is another way to go.

    • But European have adjusted their own borders since the caliphate the Mongols and the Ottomans while Africans haven't since colonialism

  • I call bullshit on this pseudo history.

  • The tragedy began when the tribe ignored the existence of the tribe and drew the borders on its own. Germany, Italy, Britain, France and other European countries are obliged to accept refugees as a responsibility for these.

  • Just leaving a comment to help with the NOlong algorithm. Nice video

  • What the Europeans did will not stand Africa is Gods land and he is in control now.

  • I think the messiness of drawing borders gets lost on us living at the end of the nationalizing process. While it's easy now to say Germany for Germans, that doesn't really fit the history of german distribution which would include parts of the Baltic and eastern Europe, the Hungarian diaspora is large as is the Russian diaspora. Wars fought by Italy over its borders include France for its western border, Austria for its northern border, and Slovenia for its Eastern border. The nationalizing process was less the congealing of borders around people so much as the congealing of people around borders. This leads to no shortage of violence and refugees after ww1 when most of these borders were drawn, ex with the massive Greek - Turkish population transfer. That said to have mature memories (it's hard to understand the world as a teenager, but let's be generous and say 10 years old) of these times one would need to be approaching 110 years old. For the vast, vast majority of people they've grown up with the same borders their grandparents and parents grew up with and thus the violence and chaos of that process has largely faded out of living memory. That and much of that history falls between the two world wars in Eastern Europe. Which makes things even harder to recognize in the anglo world.

  • Westerner make trouble everywhere.

  • Typical African, every body else is to blame for their problems

  • borders are defined by war. let africans do their thing. do not judge us by your standards and france should stop interfering and printing currencies. France attitude today is why west africa is the poorest place on the planet.

  • Stop being tribal ... problem solved

  • Good job.

  • If you judge borders by religion, you'll just cause wars. Religion causes war!?

  • In vassal state Morocco we the Riffians have the same problem. We have been put by force ( war , genocide) with the Moroccans after 1956. There is almost no future unless you leave Rif to the developer part of the vassal state. #RIFisnotMOROCCO

  • European nations realy screwed Africa over!

  • I think it would’ve been better if the Europeans made it so every 1-45 tribes were just one country that way no splits of tribe and stuff

  • In short: the problem of African border is Europians.

  • Solution is a nuke

  • Oh wow this is really good. Usually geography is just an analysis of what's going on in the world, but seeing someone make recommendations and weighing the pros and cons of the recommendations goes beyond what I know as conventional geography.

  • 8:28, That thing the arrow is pointing at this not Lake Chad, it's not even a lake it's the Bodele depression. Link to a Wikipedia article about it: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bod%C3%A9l%C3%A9_Depression

  • We dont need borders in Africa sir. We need united tribes of Africa. And why you guys never shows any Good images and pictures from Africa? We have nice places you always like to show the bad images about us. That's not right.

  • "Gold in gueina" *places over ghana* 😂😂😂

  • I didn't read entire comments. Does anyone else know that it was economic exploitation number one, #2 refusing to incorporating the the tribal soveinenty into there own nations as he explained in the beginning of the video, further help exploit the economic exploitation of each region. To find the best remedy, let's say the African nations cinference and find their solutions.

  • IM TELLING YOU THOSE EUROPEAN COME TO *US*, AND SCREW EVERYONE UP, AND THEN BLAME ON WHO? YOU GUESSED IT, ON *US*

    • How can you screw something that was in the bronce age at that time? You're objectively better now with all your conflicts, y'all were living like that in the first place

  • That’s why they should just let tribal warfare happen and then that will cause tribes to migrate and to interlink with each other to form nations and if no one intervening ahm ahm America then all problems would be fixed

  • thats why belgium dont work

  • First Europeans, now China... Moral of the story: higher living standards = fewer genocides

  • The Problem is Economic Investment is about to reverse as Boomers retire

  • "Ethnic diversity creates conflict" HMMMMMMMMMMM, IS THAT RIGHT? COLOR ME SHOCKED.

  • Sir, have you ever heard of Tamazight?

  • You forgot the closest romance language to vulgar latin, Romanian

  • The only problem with Africa that if it got devoloped it will be better than any place due to wealth it got in its soils and the fact that they dont need to import any that why some hold it progresses back so they keep it as the provider and plane b duties only .

  • Blame the Europeans.

  • Correct info north africa are with amazigh berber language not arabic there is language called darija its mixte between tamazight big part and arabic french spanish italien Speaked in morocco algeria tunisia mauritania lybia arabic in morocco algeria is just for school not speaked on homes street Arabs real arabs from meadle east don't understand darija morocco algeria tunia we are african north african amazigh We are not arabs Menority poeple think they are arabs but the truth they are just arabized at school majorité of north african can't speaak arabic classic its just for school and governament ⵡⵉ ⴰⵔ ⴰⵎⴰⵣⵉⵖ Tifinagh majorité in morocco algeria speak tamazight The prouf the canaries island under the spanish occupation they are amazigh not spain population

  • The example with Germany was pretty weird because half of Germany is catholic

  • who else is here because of world geography

  • Its funny how Africa is so rubbish and they had several thousands of years of humans before any other country, you'd think Africa would be the most technologically advanced place on earth.

    • Its funny after so many years of education someone can be so stupid.

  • Its funny how Africa is so rubbish and they had several thousands of years of humans before any other country, you'd think Africa would be the most technologically advanced place on earth.

  • United States of Africa!!! Let's go! Shout out to the NFAC!

  • We well &&&

  • What about India , how a country with so much diversity is so United ?

    • A seperate state system, a secular country. Plus you forgot the partition and how bloody that was. Yeah india cherry picked the best parts of british law, they learned from thier years of subserviance.

  • Eritrea is not islam 🤦🏽‍♂️⁉️⁉️😭

  • The reason Africa’s borders don’t work is because Africa is poor.

  • This is awesome!

  • Diversity is our Strength!

    • @Yonas Habtom yes, yes... i do Irony

    • Do you mean *diversity is our weakness?

  • If Africa claim what's belong to them am sure even part of Europe belongs to Africans

  • Only God will fight for us

  • The "afroasiatic" languages DIDN'T COME TO AFRICA FROM OUTSIDE INVOLVEMENT. The original home land of afroasiatic is Africa, not the other way round. The fact that five of six branches of Afroasiatic are situated in Africa can tell you that. Please study and search before positing nonsense.

  • very interesting, thank you very much!

  • Eventually africa will kill itself long enough that it will erupt in a stable continent. Aka what happened to Europe.

  • I keep learning about AFRICA my Continent... Thanks for the Convid-19 which made us stay at home and learn about our Continent Even now the lockdown has ENDED... I'm more conscious of my continent since this 2020 than I was. ❤️❤️🇳🇬

  • Europeans writing borders are the problem, then African leaders meet and keep the borders, because... reasons ?

  • I love your videos but I have an urge to make a correct just because hahaha. 1:01 is Ghana not Gold Coast.

    • The name previously was British Gold Coast

  • in africa exist over 50 million people speaking portuguese in Africa your Documentary is call fake news or misleading people

  • Ya i dont think tunisia can join libya or Egypt bbut they certainly csn join morrcco and algiria very similar countries and cultures and people so i dont think i would live in a country with Egypt

  • Great video, well done. But aren't you showing Barcelona to illustrate Latin America at 5:08?

  • TCHAD

  • Europeen please live my Africa alone

  • Only westerners can still think that dividing land with relegion as a framework can be a good idea, after messing it up twice before, with british india and the middle-east.

  • Is anybody else's head spinning after watching this video ?

  • It's funny how almost every major military conflict started because the UK drew some bad lines

  • Africa: *exists* also Africa: *has the most resources on the planet* *Europe wants to know your location*

  • Somebody get this man a seat at the United Nations

  • Africa has gotten more peaceful over time since decolonization - it might not help things at this point to start cutting up people's countries. The best hope is for the African Union to function like the EU - allowing and even promoting local differences, but making borders essentially obsolete.

  • Afrikaans? 😕... I find this offensive. Yet another colonizer thinking they know what's better for Africa.

    • @Anton Mussane I don't really know the answer to your question, it's tempting to say that inflation ratios is the cause, seeing as how South Africa's inflation is higher than the US, but that couldn't be the case seeing as how your massive gold reserves should be able to back the value of your money. So all I can guess is either some scheme/corrupt mining company is embezzling gold, or the USA is importing a _ton_ of gold, perhaps contributing the national debt.

    • @Snek Snekier First things first, please don't vote for Donald Trump on November 3rd 😂😂🤣... Here's my question: Why is it that 17 units of our currency is only worth 1 unit of your currency when we're the ones with the actual Gold reserves? To put things into perspective, Africa has 30% of the world's mineral reserves, 8% of the world's natural gas, 12% of the world's oil reserves; the continent has 40% of the world's Gold and up to 90% of its Chromium and Platinum. The above is far more damning that it looks at first glance. A third of the World's Cobalt comes from the DRC, this is in almost every electronic device with a Lithium Ion battery, Tesla being one of the largest consumers, albeit finding more innovative ways around this, it's still worth noting. Do you see why Africa can't objectively rely on external help for development? An argument could be made that this continents stagnant growth help those who profit from its resources by acquiring them for far less than they are worth.

    • @Anton Mussane The USA

    • @Snek Snekier Where are you from? I have a question of my own that I would like to ask.

    • @Anton Mussane I'm going to be honest, this has to be the single most well educated comment I think I have ever read in all of NOlong, I applaud you. Interesting points, no bias, and you don't act like one solution will fix the whole continent. I've learned more about Africa from reading your response than any video on geopolitics I think I've ever watched.

  • Africa has enough resources to become richest continent in the world But corruption take that all

  • I liked the video, however, some corrections: The Afroasiatic languages were NOT brought to North Africa and the Horn via Islam. It's the other way around. Semetic languages exist in the Horn as well (Tigrinya for ex). Did you forget Eritrea existed? That's a huge oversight.. Cushtic and Semetic languages are found there too, same as with Ethiopia. That map of Cushitic (which would include Semetic) Ethiopia isn't accurate lol Lastly, the same Ethiopian Orthodox Tewahedo is found in Eritrea albeit named the Eritrean Orthodox Tewahedo; it is the majority religion in Eritrea.
