Show Notes:
[1:00] Jordan Peterson kicks off the conversation by asking why and how Matthew McConaughey wrote his book Greenlights.
[4:00] Matthew realized he needed to write the book himself without a ghostwriter as initially planned and dig back into his journals as a form of necessary reflection on the past.
[6:00] Matthew’s old journals revealed their common thread through all the stories, poems, and bumper stickers. That common thread was the creation of good things in life through mindset or action “Greenlights.”
[12:00] Jordan talks about his initial response after reading Matthew’s book and how his expectations were changed.
[14:00] Matthew talks about his solo trips when starting to create the structure of his book. Jordan comments that this was a book written by a celebrity that did not really focus on the traditional parts of being a celebrity (very family-focused and foundational). Matthew states, “When we were editing the book, I found that the more personal the stories became, the more relatable they seemed to become, to the human condition, and that was my hope.”
[18:00] Jordan and Matthew revisit the African trip, chasing dreams and having the same exact dream multiple times over the span of many years.
[24:00] What was the personal impact on Matthew during his trip to Africa where he got to strip away the identity we all know him for and exist as something else? Jordan comments that very often, people confuse their reputation with who they really are, and they start to act as a representation of their reputation instead of themselves; it’s an easy trap to fall into.
[22:00] Matthew discusses dealing with the pitfalls of fame. Matthew covers his changing relationship with his mother due to success.
[25:00] Jordan B. Peterson asks Matthew McConaughey about some of his acting work in True Detective and playing dark characters. “How do you play a dark role very well without letting the darkness invade you?”
[32:00] Matthew talks about the positive aspects of the sometimes tense relationship with his father and having a childhood that balanced love and hardship directed from the same people.
[37:00] Jordan and Matthew continue talking about going deeper into the psychology of a dark character like Rustin Cole on True Detective
[45:30] Matthew expanded on the short-term effects of initial fame.
[51:30] Matthew and Jordan discuss the long-term effects of fame.
[55:00] Jordan points out, “If flawed people were incapable of creativity, we would have no creativity.”
[1:03:00] How Matthew and Jordan first became friends.
[1:07:30] Matthew shares a comical review of his own book written as if Jordan was the one reviewing it.

  • Matthew McConaughey’s new book Greenlights:

    • Been praying for you Jordan!!

    • Nice job, Matthew. I hope to read this next week. Good interview Jordan... Always willing to watch an intelligent man no matter his past

    • Why not interview professor Dolores Cahill..... Someone actually doing something for the world..... World doctors alliance..... World freedom alliance..... Freedom airways.....

    • 😒The biggest secret in Hollyweird is that they simply want their OLD LIVES BACK!!! Unfortunately the demon cabal doesn't allow THAT!!! ➡PSA-DON'T ALLOW YOUR KIDS IN HOLLYWEIRD-PERIOD-IT'S EVIL!!!

    • ✔I'd NEVER want to be FAMOUS'-'NEVER!! ] How can you posdibly enjoy this?!!! ❓Don't you want to be LEFT ALONE?! BTW-ALL CONSERVATIVES WANNA BE LEFT ALONE DAMMIT!!!

  • Thank you for talking about true detective! Thank you Peterson Junior! This is an amazing amazing show...

  • Good moral based people lack the praise society should celebrate them with. This book is available on Audible.

  • Matthew is one of the very few people in Holywood who has high moral code, correct set of values and independent cognitive process. Great intervew👍

  • Two great men!

  • I want so badly for JP to have a discussion with Elon Musk on AI and how it will take purpose from peoples lives even though it arguably helps people

  • I always say why do poor people always have no many kids...

  • Very encouraging 👏.

  • Im getting this book

  • Plz no more alright alright alright jokes, isn't funny

  • Holy shit! He’s back!!! Best day ever!

  • Jordan, we love you, but not in this role pandering to some unknown b classic actor.

  • I met Matthew in 1999 during the premier of the film “U571” in Los Ángeles while on active duty in the US Navy when we were invited to be military ambassadors to the film’s premiere. He was one of the most amiable and approachable cast members at the event. After having met Matthew, I have followed his career with great perseverance. I have even shown my children photos of the event with he and I, and said to them, “Matthew met your daddy!” This interview demonstrates the candor and openness of both Matthew and Jordan to agree and be in Simpático with one another which makes this discussion that much more enriching to the viewers of this collaboration!

  • Jordan stepping in to defend Matt's mom says a lot.Sounded really disrespectful toward his mom. When you're a grown man, famous or not, it's time to get over what you need your parents to be for you.

  • As a general rule I pay no actors opinions any attention because they're usually just nonsense. The fact that McConaughey’s articulate and thoughtful though puts him in a league of his own. This is in stark contrast to the likes of De Niro, who seems to have become confused and thinks he's actually the tough guy he merely played so many times.

  • Damn and here I thought ypur daughter accidentally killed you lol

  • So glad you are back and in good health. God bless you.

  • Matthew speaks too much. So many words to say so little.

  • Has Matthew come over to the good side? 😉

  • Wow 2 monuments

  • Just let your self be bald Mathew, it's authentic.

  • Is MM in that “actors club” free masonry Gematria media ?

  • So much wisdom in 1 video.

  • Thank you both. Top shelf inspiring

  • The only thing I'm afraid is to not be a person Dr. Jordan peterson would like to have around

  • For selebs a mask is cool because they can go places and no one can see who they are.

  • This was a great interview. Thank God JP is back so we can continue to soak up his wisdom and insight. He changed my life on so many different levels over the years.

  • Why is Matthew McConaughey looking like Phillion's older brother?

  • It’s so obvious that these two are having a real connection. McConaughey seems genuinely (& gratefully) challenged by Peterson’s questions/comments & is really forthcoming with his answers.

  • Fantastic

  • When I was young and worked in a building of almost 2000 people everyone knew of me and spread rumors about me and I was pretty good looking way back then and I would hear crazy rumors about me almost always sexual and it got where I would go out of the way to take back steps instead of elevators and do anything not to have to pass people. I was "building famous" I had no kind of popularity before in school or anything and thought I would have loved being popular in any situation but I ended up wanting to be invisible. No one in the building outside of two people knew me. They knew of me. I started wearing hoodies w the hood on, no make-up and even had 5 of the same hoodies and 5 of the same pair of pants and made it my uniform so that nothing about me would be new enough to notice. I wanted to sink into the background. For this reason I think I understand how fame could be and why it doesn't impress me. I wasn't world famous but for 12 years that building was my world. I do not miss it. I don't even miss my good looks and believe me they are all gone. I didn't really have an opinion of Matthew McConaughey other than I loved his True Detective character because it reminded me so much of me in my thirties but I am glad he has been coming out and just being himself. I like him and I am pretty sure it's not game I like.

  • Who would have thought they would have such good chemistry? Great podcast

  • Very nice.

  • I think we should all wear lobster 🦞 pins on our shirts to show our love for Jordan Peterson

  • “-the guys got a gift of gab, eh, what can I say?!”

  • Fantastic episode! Big fan of Matthew, what an amazing human!

  • Loved this, Matthew and Jordan are a lot of fun and make a lot of sense

  • 12:40

  • Matthew McConaughey calling Jordan "Sir" in the end, a sign of deep respect. It's amazing Jordan work not only inspire young people, but also those who are quite successful.

  • I know everyone keeps saying it but it is so great seeing Jordan Peterson again.

  • At 57 min. in. Contrition and repentance AREN'T enough to satisfy justice. But God. Jesus. So, apart from God & justice plus grace thru Jesus, yes, it's one unsatisfactory hot mess and people are drawn to various places on the spectrum to try to take up a position on & a code to live by, but they'll all be problematic.

  • Great video you two! Loved it

  • 42 min. in : Basically, it's that God doesn't enable us to baby ourselves, tho He is so patient, he knows we're not best off if He treats us as if we're kids. We are His kids, but grown ups too and that's the kind of hands on the wheel responsibility that doesn't contradict an otherwise "Jesus take the wheel" submission to God in life. That would be better known as God is your map program but it is your body in the driver's seat, always having the choice to obey, & to listen for His voice, or not. Which of course is reflective of whether or not u truly trust Him or are willing to submit to your Creator & Redeemer. Then, right after in speaking about his laughter in response to dark characters or philosophies, I would just add my 2 cents here of the thought that, seeing his face, body language and all when he laughed, esp. that 1st time or 2, seemed more a laugh of a joyful interest in life, than one of finding something "funny" .

  • I would be interested to know how you feel when visiting east TX. Being from Cass county TX myself, I'm just curious how the people here interact with you now? What are your impressions of our unique culture now that you have seen so many others to compare it to. How did you feel about it when you were young?

  • he is so great.......just ask him

  • Chronologically, I was a fan of McConaughy, then Peterson. I was so disillusioned with Hollywood and everything in it. Narcissism in Hollywood reached almost to the heavens. But McConaughy was a breath of fresh air. Thank you for that. Mr. Peterson, sir, you are always your brilliant self. Thank you both.

  • How amazing listening to these 2 men

  • Both of these men are true legends that every man can learn something from. Respect.

  • I get older. And they stay the same age.

  • Pure pleasure to watch. Much respect.

  • Captivating, uplifting, inspiring! ♥️

  • Great interview! 👏🙂 I enjoyed that.

  • I couldn't help but notice how animated Mr. McConaughey was during the interview. I thought it made it that more interesting to watch. I ordered the hardcopy of his book from Amazon right after watching this interview.

  • I was literally thinking, I hope he brings up True detective and then Boom. Manifestation baby

  • With regards to Matthew's last words here: I always feel we don't let time take it's course. We wish for things to change right now. But everything can't change right now, we have to work on it, and let time take it's course. Sometimes I think we make it worse by trying to force the square peg into the round hole, instead of finding the square hole. Of course, that doesn't mean we shouldn't do anything, [Insert any number of Jordan Peterson lectures here]

  • Apparently, McConaughey doesn't give a rat's ass what Hollyweird thinks!

  • I said earlier today that I think Denzel Washington should play Jordan Peterson in the movie about Jordan Peterson (Because that guy gets it) But seems Matthew McConaughey already is auditioning for the part (That impression was great)

  • I really enjoyed this podcast.

  • What a wonderful conversation!

  • Thanks Jordan, It was an amazing podcast to listening to and thanks to bringing Matthew. And now I have new book to listen to so excited

  • DJs are wetting themselves ripping the "Molly" (🇲🇱 Mali) segment of this interview 😆

  • Be careful Matthew. The cancel culture is coming for you now. Anyone who thinks outside the square is a fascist apparently. God forbid we oppose totalitarianism and authoritarianism or MSM and the status quo. Gee whiz, we must be fascists lol or something like that.

  • You both enlighten me. Thank you

  • Is this a recent take? Does this mean you're back now or is it just a repost?

  • this book was so cringey it reminded me of never sharing my journals with anyone, ever! I don´t believe Mr Peterson enjoyed this read.

  • What america needs now more than ever is newage, spirit-angel, wet dream, narcisistic, celebrity autobiography shilling. Thank you Jordan for wasting the time of two million people with your magnificently profound interview. Very different.

  • Douche chills

  • Bah, eu preciso aprender inglês. URGENTE!

  • Can care less about a celebrity whose been witness to the depravity and does nothing

  • Thank you both gentlemen for every word spoken, everything resonates with me so strongly that I'm crying! I dont seek pity writing that I look back and feel I've been battling evil my whole life even becoming a soldier and after leaving the battles continued, to the point of PTSD for the last 12 years. I have no shame admitting I was beaten by the onslaught and alone completely almost, I never forgot our Father I didn't visit that often I feel fits our relationship. I turned to Our father, Lord Jesus, Holy spirit all Heaven and pleaded to please take me I can't fight anymore the pain and battles was too great. I remembered these words as a child " when you are most broken? Worthy? HE WILL COME!" THEY CAME. I asked only for knowledge and understanding, the next day I experienced a blast of light like a pebble hitting still water, I was blessed im absolutely sure, no doubt. I'm still battling but higher ground, seeing more knowing more the same battles and alone! Alone feeling an overwhelming sense of love I've been denied. I feel like I'm learning a new language? And you gentlemen both speak it. I thank you for giving me a little clarity I'm not fighting alone I never was and I can't lose. Now I visit every day, I feel in love. God bless all.

  • Not 1 Question about the Disgusting Hollywood Machine? I assume... Goodbye Jordan Peterson.. you are my favorite Gatekepper

  • Only thing I didn't like about this interview was the editing. I think it would've been better if each person was continuously displayed even when not talking, because I often found the jump cuts visually confusing

  • That was amazing! Too bad it was not longer.. :)

  • Peterson looks like he looked into hell and it shook him to the core. However he doesnt seem as incredibly angry as he used to. Of course Mccaughey is a sycophant reason to be angry I guess.

  • God he's fried.

  • What a great discussion.

  • beautiful

  • Really enjoyed this one🔥inspirational

  • I feel like there is a big need for young/ teenage actors/ tiktokers from Romania. Great job!

  • Jordan Peterson, How are you doing? Tell me a bit about yourself said, Not Matthew McConaughey

  • This comment might get lost but... I was thinking for a long time why Matthew thought his mom was star struck...? That's falling prey to cognitive dissoniance. Did Matthew's other brothers work as hard as him? And if they did work as hard as him, is it not possible they would be in a comparatively better position than one they are in now? What you do is who you are. Is it not possible his mom loved him more than his brothers because of the hardworking man he grew up to be rather than the fame he accumulated from it?

  • Jordan, you are a master. But let the goddam guy talk

  • !!!!

  • Jordan, your messages are exactly what I need to hear right now. You're helping me take responsibility and ENJOY taking responsibility for what I need to change in my life. I love the way you deliver your insights...(paraphrasing) "You're doing things you shouldn't be doing? Don't do them for a year and see what your life is like." Straight-forward, and really, no hint of judgment in your statements-only truth. Very grateful. Thank you.

  • That was great! Going to get both books!

  • So glad to see Jordan Peterson back from all his trials and tribulations of the last year. Thankful to hear his voice and incite.

  • Welp there goes Matthews Hollywood friends lol he keeps talking that sense with people and no more jobs for u lol Hollywood is so sick

  • Two of the best!

  • 53:45 Father

  • Matthew, are you sane?

  • I absolutely need an interview between Jordan Peterson and Norm MacDonald.

  • most of this video is jordan trying to interpret mathew so we can understand him

  • LEGENDARY! I cannot say how much I enjoyed this. Deeply engaging, honest, thought provoking, inspirational, and soul stirring! Mr. McConaughey is a man of surprising depth. Truly a pleasure to spend time with Jordan and Matthew. I look forward to the next time!

  • "McConaughey is real and always will be real. He has huge heart. The part of Texas I am from, there are no higher compliments.

  • I greatly appreciate the discernment and honesty and what I take from this interview of both Mr. McConaughey and Dr. Jordan Peterson is acknowledgement of God's manifestation as Jesus Christ in the flesh on Earth and is in control of all things.

  • The mellow island arespectively depend because psychology untypically reproduce midst a holistic hose. synonymous, cold angora

  • Two great geniuses of our time- equal in intelligence

  • I think the thing with Matt’s mom seems like something I could also be guilty if, sometimes I just feel so much love fir my daughter I just feel very proud and blessed and being older now, 53, it is hard for me not to be emotional at times, my daughter gets annoyed, because I cry sometimes, mothers can be very emotional about letting go as well when their kids grow up, mostly because they have more time to love them after they are grown and mom is retired, not doing so many things at once like she was when she was raising her kids.

  • When you have this level of fame and power (even if you don’t) should not opportunities like this allow for the focus be pulled more on - What can I do for Mali, more than - what can Mali do for me?

  • Love you guys, kiss kiss 💋
