Let's face it- natural gas and coal are the best solutions, nuclear should be base load, and wind and solar have limited use. Storage will be orders of magnitude more expensive. Also, these are first- world problems. The third world cannot afford these luxurious alternatives.
Renewables aren't cheap because they are subsidized. Renewables are cheap because we use fossil fuel powered industries and transport to produce them. Also, i think it wouod be interesting to compare fossil and renewable subsidies with regard to how much energy they produce. Last tipe I checked, the world mainly runs on fossil fuels which means that the subsidies per kilowatt-hour are lower no? That being said, i agree renewables still are crucial to fighting climate change along with nuclear, and we really need to phase fossil fuel out of our energy production for sure.

One thing that you have missed is comparing energy prices between Germany and France. Germany has 0.31€ for Kwh, and France has 0.18€ per Kwh. So somehow, 50-40% of renewable energy makes the prices in Germany 2 times higher which makes renewable energy 4 times more expensive. It may be different in California of course, but California ain't all of the USA, right?

As a kid growing up in the 70s and 80s, coming home from a store with a new album was exciting. Looking at the album art, reading liner notes, etc, was a treat. I have tonnes of CDs, but today I still enjoy the tactile ritual of removing vinyl from its inner sleeve, placing it gently on the platter, and carefully lowering the tone arm and making sure the stylus is lined up properly to land in the groove at the right place. Then waiting for the music to begin... To me that’s part of the whole at home music listening experience.

Here's the problem you need to sort out before the f35 will ever enter production in the 1,000s, or become a workhorse in a fleet of 4,500+ like the F16 -- SAM installations are already big, expensive, concurrent, subsidized, have billion dollar contracts handed out like hotcakes to countries like Belarus and Syria. Low-frequency SAM launchers can always be made more mobile, more active (radar)/passive (EOTS) flexible, more armored, more camouflaged, more sophisticated, more adaptive, more multispectral, more multistatic, have more range, made with more ECM/ECCM -- because all they have to do is sit and do one thing. SAMs themselves often forgo the need for a hard lock using high-explosive air fragmentation, aquiring target lock through means other than radar. Meanwhile a lightweight, fast, supposedly affordable airframe can only support X number of sapphire windows and ECM/ECCM baubles before getting too costly to build, support, or risk getting damaged -- a flying Ferrari. And the F35 has become a flying Farrari exactly BECAUSE the theatre threat level is increasing in both capability and sophistication. As long as a SAMs mere presence increases the general threat level for every new fighter generation, the threat cycle will never end -- the launcher doesn't need to freely strike targets or do anything (although the S-400 missiles reportedly can). And it's only going to get worse and worse for every stealth-orientated plane. This obsession with beating every missile system is literally killing the very reason for the f35s existence -- "stealth", as it pertains to confusing sensor tracks, is simply a means for tax money to flow from Washington to Lockheed. "First look, first shot, first kill" is a pipe dream cooked up by fantasies of never getting overwhelmed in-theatre. The stealth concept itself is antithetical to the light-weight, workhorse mission of the F35; which is why there are only ~615 and not 4,500 of them by now. As long as it's cheaper to launch a missile and possibly degrade an F35, the cost:benefit ratio of SAMs persists. And, as of 2021, the Chief of the US Air Force is now looking for anything in a gen 4.5 to be their Ford F-150, not a gen 5 Ferrari. By definition any gen 4.5 would be less complex, have shorter development time, be cheaper to build, maintain and/or risk in a fight than a gen 5. Gen 4.5 wouldn't even exist as a concept if that wasn't the case. A gen 5 would have its place but in a limited role. Chief of Staff Gen. Charles Q. Brown Jr. [2021, speaking on the “fourth-and-a half/fifth-gen minus” mix]: “Actually, I want to build something new and different that’s not the F-16; that has some of those capabilities, but gets there faster, using our digital approach.” Dan Grazier, an analyst with the Project on Government Oversight in Washington, D.C.: "If we’re going to pull the trigger on a new fighter, now’s probably the time.” The Air Force could end F-35 production after just a few hundred examples and redirect tens of billions of dollars to a new fighter program.

Even if they, to some extend, still exist and you call them by metric measures, they where still engineered for inch. As an engineer myself I don't understand why a channel claiming to be "real engineering" seems to believe that Climate change is a "real" issue when past data shows worst climate change than in resent times. It seems to me like these days we are all brainwashed into spending massive amounts of money on the absolute worst technologies for improving the environment rather than sound science, I mean engineering should be real science not based the New York Times and their ideas of what is best...that's a slippery slope.
And yet.... many Architects and designers of buildings, and other things that people interact with, such as furniture, prefer the Imperial system, for the simple reason that that the imperial system relates closely to the human body. The stride of an adult is a yard, a foot is self explanatory, a cubit is the length of your forearm, and inch is the end-joint of your thumb. When we built our own (timber framed) house, we knew we were going to use a lot of 8x4 sheets of plywood. Who wants to spend construction time trimming 22cm off the width of every sheet of ply? What will you do with the waste material? Even the Swiss-French Architect le Corbusier thought that the Imperial system was more sympathetic to the needs of human beings. The fact that the metric system is intellectually logical does not make it "comfortable" for people to use in daily life. Until the metric system can cope with the needs of ordinary human beings the old ways will persist.
